The first three digits of any country are determined by the country's bar code rules. While Europe uses the European Article Number, the United States uses the UPC-A bar code. The 890 barcode was created by GS1 India, according to Barcode 1. It disproves the popular belief that this barcode number indicates the country of origin. Rather, the first few digits of the barcode number represent the nation of origin of the barcode number, not the country of origin of the goods. This also clarifies that the numbers 690 to 699 do not imply that the product is made in China. While it is possible to determine which country the product's barcode belongs to, it is not possible to determine whether the goods belongs to that country.

For example, if a French business imports a product from India and distributes it to Ireland, the product's barcode's country code may suggest that the product is from France. As a result, if people in Ireland do not consume Indian items, they will be unaware that the product originated in India.
